Glass Coffee Tables Open Up a Living Room

There are certain pieces of furniture that can add or detract from a room’s appearance. In a smaller room, big bulky furniture can be a definite distraction. For large rooms, dainty furniture that does not have enough bulk to support the breadth of the room can also be unwelcome. What do you do when the furniture threatens to overtake a room? That is when you call in the glass coffee table. This one piece of furniture can singularly transform a room’s look and feel.

The Glass Table

There are many different types of glass tables. There are those that have metal bases and are more modern in design. There are also those that have wooden bases that offer a slightly more traditional feel. The base of the glass table is going to play a significant factor in the mood that the table creates in the room. Choose one that fits the look and feel of the other furniture. With the right coffee table in place, your room will suddenly take on a brand new airy lightness, whether it is decorated with contemporary wall mount candle holders or medieval decorative wall tapestries.

Size and Shape

The size and shape of the glass table are as important as the base of the table itself. Glass tables can come in everything from fun round tops to edgy rectangular ones. The shape of the table should compliment the other lines in your room’s decor. For instance, if your side tables are round and traditional, the shape of the glass coffee table should match that. Keep an eye on the size of the table, as well. Even a glass table that is too large can overpower a room and make it appear cluttered. Select a size that fits with the available space. It is also a good idea to look at the furniture that it will be placed near the table. A sofa, for example, can handle a much larger coffee table in front of it than a side chair. The proportions of the table should be inline with the rest of the room’s furniture and accessories.

Fun Accents

There are also some beautiful ways to accent a glass coffee table. If there is a shelf under the table, consider placing baskets of colorful yarn or shells underneath. While it adds visual interest, it does not distract from the openness that the glass provides to the room’s decor. If you are crafty, you may want to use a glass etching kit to add a subtle design on the glass table’s surface. Glass etching may sound highly intimidating, but there are simple craft kits that can walk you through the process. It is a great way to highlight other elements and designs in the room and create a cohesive feel.

Adding a glass table to a room’s design is a simple way to brighten the area and create a more open feel. If you are worried about small children, choose a table that has no sharp corners or edges. It is also a good idea to choose a tempered glass when small children will be near. Glass tables may not be for every home, but they do offer a great option for those rooms that need to be brightened and lightened.
